I entered the grub menu with "e" as you said, and appended i915.modeset=0 to the end of the line beginning "linx", with a space behind the last entry, which was "quiet splash $vt_handoff". Couldn't figure out how to append the "0x64000" parameters to the line. I got a correctly colored "Linux Mint" logo, and the message "Failed to start the x server"..."Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?". Please let me know what I should do next.
