GPU crash dump

Running Xubuntu 14.04, the desktop periodically (at least once per week)
freezes, but can be "fixed" by switching to a virtual terminal and rebooting.
The end of dmesg shows:
...
174290.346217] [drm] stuck on render ring
[174290.346226] [drm] GPU crash dump saved to /sys/class/drm/card0/error
[174290.346228] [drm] GPU hangs can indicate a bug anywhere in the entire gfx
stack, including userspace.
[174290.346230] [drm] Please file a _new_ bug report on bugs.freedesktop.org
against DRI -> DRM/Intel
[174290.346233] [drm] drm/i915 developers can then reassign to the right
component if it's not a kernel issue.
[174290.346235] [drm] The gpu crash dump is required to analyze gpu hangs, so
please always attach it.
[174290.349597] [drm:i915_set_reset_status] *ERROR* render ring hung inside bo
(0x929f000 ctx 0) at 0x929f55c

While the crash doesn't appear to be associated with a specific application, it
seems to happen when resizing windows. lspci lists the device as:
