<pre>If I understand correctly, the only way that could happen was if the damage was
empty. Hmm. I couldn't see a way we would make that mistake, it would cause
various issues (but shouldn't actually affect rendering) as the assumption is
that no damage is tracked by the NULL pointer.</pre>
