OK I am sorry. It turns out all the weirdness occurs on my attached
BenQ FP747 monitor!
I found the fix was to change
xrandr --output VGA1 --auto --brightness 0.6 #to
xrandr --output VGA1 --brightness 0.6
And now everything is fine.
Then I don't need this in
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/67-jidanni.conf
anymore:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection
nor do I need to resort to holding back post May 2014 versions of the
package either.
I'm not sure why I used --auto in the first place. But now that it
broke starting May 2014, I'll stay away from it.
