That might explain why display sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I also added a patch to intel-gpu-tools that throws a note when hotplug event is received. If you could run the following test 1. testdisplay -m 2. Unplug HDMI connector 3. Plug back HDMI connector You should see only two "hotplug events". One for unplugging the connector and one for plugging the connector back.
