I would say that that is a workaround. A solution would be something
that wouldn't rely on the user doing the right thing or at least guide
the user to dtrt. Maybe some emergency-print-code in the driver to
show "no console loaded, shutting pipe down" or smth else?

But this is just my opinion. And it isn't really that big an issue. 
(Maybe there is some "bluescreen" stuff on it's way already?)
