Yet, the

if (A)
  pipeconf = READ() & MAGIC;
else
  pipeconf = 0;
if (B)
  pipeconf = READ() & MAGIC2;

is still ugly.

Good news, testing nightly+ with patch results in machine death. Now
seeing just where death creeps in.
