This feature has been added to udlfb. Commit at:
http://git.plugable.com/gitphp/index.php?p=udlfb&a=commitdiff&h=eb76b04f0841e85d68f748511722e2a50dbda3ee

(just git pull the latest, to also get other fixes)

One way of testing this new support:

1) Plug in adapter and monitor, save off good edid via "cp
/sys/class/graphics/fb0/edid ~/backup.edid"
2) Plug in adapter without monitor connected (verify fallback 800x600
mode set via "dmesg")
3) Copy back good edid "cp ~/backup.edid /sys/class/graphics/fb0/edid"
4) verify monitor-native best mode set (via dmesg)
5) attach monitor and verify green screen in best mode

Any bug reports welcome.

This is a nice feature to have because it at least gives advanced
users a mechanism for embedded platforms and other cases where edid is
not present, to supply a pre-canned edid that can get them up and
running.

Best wishes,
Bernie
