The patch is now in git master, so you can:
$ git clone https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mobile-broadband/libqmi.git
$ cd libqmi
$ NOCONFIGURE=1 ./autogen.sh
$ ./configure --prefix=/usr && make -j8 && sudo make install

That will install it on top of whatever other libqmi you had installed, beware.
