Try with localized version (non-English!).
LibreoOfice 3.4.2 (build 203), 64 bit, Ubuntu 10.10. LibreOffice is localized
to Lithuanian Language.

To reproduce this bug, You can try those steps:

1) Clean install LibreOffice 3.4.2 from official page.
2) Install LITHUANIAN language pack (maybe this bug is related to my language
settings?)
3) Set Libreoffice GUI Language to Lithuanian, and all other settings too.
4) TRY to work with Lithuanian Interface ( hard, but maybe here is a problem?)
5) Try to reproduce bug.

 > I cannot seem to access "styles and formatting".
 > It is all in gray. I do not know why.

How it can be? Maybe you  do not leaved a „read-only“ mode?
