Rainer: i can say that I know only very view products that have this explicit
split between extraction and installation. From the software I use it is only
openoffice and the ATI catalyst driver. Maybe other installers do this more
hidden by extracting to some tmp-folder and cleaning up after themselves
afterwards.
Also: does anybody know how microsoft installer handles msi-files? Bc. that
would be the "easiest" also when it comes to installation on multiple computers
(at least I was told that msi can do that quite conveniently).

Tor: yes, I know this is legacy from OOo, but I believe that now is the time to
throw out such 'legacy' behaviour :)
1 and 2 don't really contradict each other but two separate downsides of the
problem in my opinion. The location does not change that it requires extra
space (though this is my smallest concern with HDD space being cheaper than
ever), whilst the placement on the desktop is more or less a cosmetic thing
(esp. considering that users may think the folder is actually important).
