Summary: Enhance or Revamp the User Interface
           Product: LibreOffice
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: medium
         Component: UI
        AssignedTo: libreoffice-bugs at lists.freedesktop.org
        ReportedBy: akr.colours9 at gmail.com

I could like to suggest that LibreOffice move away from the antiquated Office
97-style toolbar and buttons interface and have it replaced with something more
modern.

For starters, consider having Mac OS X-style large-button toolbars containing
the most frequently-used commands, but having these placed on the side of the
window rather than having it run across the top, to take advantage of the wider
screen space of widescreen monitors today (this should be able to be moved to
the top for people still using non-widescreen monitors).

For less frequently-used commands, they can be placed in a horizontally-running
toolbar with small icons, containing commands that change depending on the
context. For example, if I'm working on a spreadsheet in Calc, I should see
commands related to spreadsheet data entry and formatting on this toolbar,
while if I'm working on a chart, I should see commands related to manipulating
the chart's data and format.

As for the icons, I suggest making them more minimal-looking; these icons
should ideally be simply glyphs that visually stay out of the way and do not
attract attention to themselves. The focus of the user should be on the
document he or she is working on, not on how pretty the icons look.
