I have the same problem 
LibreOffice 3.4.3 
OOO340m1 (Build:302)
running under Debian Linux

Problem appears with Adobe Type 1 fonts e.g. ITC Palatino
accented characters (those above ASCII 128) are substituted with others e.g.
pound sign becomes ugrave
On some occasions spaces also disappear but this is not always the case (still
investigating)

Problem disappears if changed to True Type fonts for the same document
