The snapshot attached does display the problem, despite what comment #7 says. 
I was rushed this morning.

The good news is that found the setting that causes the problem.  It's the
keyboard setting that changes the way Alt keys are handled.  I unset the option
"Any Alt key" in the option labeled "Key to choose 3rd level".

The bug persists no matter how I open up an odf document...  I triede the
following procedures:

Start from the LibreOffice panel.  Use the "File->Open" menu option,
or
Start from the LibreOffice panel.  Click on the "Text Document" icon,
or
Start Writer directly from the Ubuntu dash (this problem may be Ubuntu
specific).  Use "File->Open" to open the document.
or
Start Writer directly from the Ubuntu dash (this problem may be Ubuntu
specific).  Use "File->Recent Documents" to open the document.
