Possible workaround: the option 'Detect special numbers' seems to cause the £
field to be given the 'currency' format, in GBP, correctly.

Was this what was required?

This was done by opening a .csv file containing Gary's sample line. A window
called 'Text import' appears, with various options, among them 'Detect special
numbers'. Version 3.4.3.

Perhaps it should be made clearer that this option is important for currency
fields?
