Me too: libreoffice 1:3.5.1-1ubuntu1~oneiric1  but also noticed in earlier
versions.

It's not every image in the document, sometimes some show.  I have one document
here (sorry, can't attach it) that contains about 10 images.. the first comes
up blank/error as described in this bug report, the rest display. Mix of JPEG
and PNG images. I haven't determined any different between the visible and
invisible images.  

If I "Save as " an ODT, then reopen, the missing image appears! However the
image positioning is even more haywire than when opening the docx. (eg jammed
against page edge, overlapping each other etc, such that the document expands
from 4 pages (as in Word) to 6 in LO.  
Most of the images in my sample document appear to be 'anchor as character' but
they sure don't behave like it. 

Also perhaps relevant: export to PDF shows empty space where image placeholder
is in LO.
