Hi sasha,
I'm half able to reproduce the problem.
But when trying 4, 5 times immediately after one another, the picture is
selected.
Another possibility: select the blue shape first and use TAB then.

tested in 3.5.2 on Ubuntu.
OK for you too in this way?
