Usually, this comes up when someone wants to alternate the background on
(invisible on print) tables like this:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
...........................
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
...........................
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX


Without the ability to select non adjacent cells/rows/columns
this becomes tedious.
