I can confirm this on my machine, running LibreOffice 3.3.4 on Ubuntu 11.04.
Files saved as .ods retain the external link, files saved as .xls do not. Upon
saving the file, I reopen it to see alterations made to the file path such as
the use of lower case letters instead of (in my case) upper case letters in
filenames. Also, the sheet name in the link path is no longer there, it is
replaced by two single quotes.
