Bug #: 50519
Summary: UI: Confusing "Do you want to overwrite it?" dialog in
Wizard->Letter->...Finish
Classification: Unclassified
Product: LibreOffice
Version: LibO 3.5.3 release
Platform: Other
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Status Whiteboard: BSA
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Writer
AssignedTo: libreoffice-bugs at lists.freedesktop.org
ReportedBy: wangd at uci.edu
Problem description:
(Fedora rpm: 3.5.3.2-3.fc17)
Using the Wizard -> Letter menu item, I navigated through a few pages of Next>
clicks and finally at the end, clicked Finish. I immediately got a dialog box
with the title "LibreOffice 3.5" with text: "The file already exists. Do you
want to overwrite it?" and buttons "Yes" and "No". At this point, there is no
indication of the file's name, so the user does not know what the dialog box is
referring to. I have left the template name blank and the "Location and file
name" field refers to some template file ".../myLetterTemplate.ott". But this
shouldn't be what is being overwritten, because I am creating a new letter. As
a user, I am not consciously creating a template, so naming the template or
selecting a template file should not be needed.
Clicking "No" closes the wizard window and the window underneath which
presumably shows a preview of the document being created by the wizard.
Steps to reproduce:
1. New instance of Writer
2. Wizard -> Letter
3. Click next, repeating until the last page.
4. Click Finish
5. Receive dialog asking about file overwrite.
Current behavior:
User doesn't expect to be asked about overwrite. Clicking no, she probably
expects to be able to edit the new document, but instead, the wizard, dialog,
and preview document windows all close, returning to the original blank
instance of Writer.
Expected behavior:
Allow the user to begin editing the new document, if the safe choice is picked
("No" when asked about overwrite).
Platform (if different from the browser): Fedora 17, x86
Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686) AppleWebKit/535.11 (KHTML, like Gecko)
Chrome/17.0.963.79 Safari/535.11
Suggested resolutions:
* Indicate what file "already exists" in the dialog box or in the final wizard
pane.
* If saving a new template file is required in order to create a letter, notify
the user of this (not so good), or create the template file in a temporary
location since the user obviously doesn't care about the template, having not
named it (better).
* Eliminate the need for writing the template file, since the user doesn't want
one in this case anyway.
