Reading back thru this is discouraging.  Several comments indicate that I've
got plenty of company in wanting this, and others make it sound like it
shouldn't be hard to implement, yet 6 years later it still hasn't become a
priority to someone who can make it happen.

Is there any real hope for getting this done by version 6.0?
