Using gen VCL backend is what causes x11 to be shown in the About window.

If you now use SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk, it will use gtk2. You should just remove
SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN altogether and it should default to gtk3.

For the record, I have no problems with gen.
