I am not sure I follow your claim that they are in different fonts.  The symbol
%irho represents character ρ (Unicode U+3C1), and the symbol %varrho represents
ϱ (U+3F1).  They are different characters, and are using the same font in the
formula editor, as far as I can see.

Exactly which part of the page am I supposed to see?  The first sentence says
"... lowercase ρ or ϱ".
