Reporter again responded via email (please don't do it!) rather than commenting
here:
"Thanks for this suggestion.  I tried it a couple of times and it worked
perfectly and didn't crash."

Mike: can you try one more thing: launch from the command line with

libreoffice --safe-mode

(so without the SAL_ thing)

You will see a big dialog. Click continue in Safe mode. Then try to replicate
the crash. The safe mode is a temporary state.

Another way to reach it is from LibreOffice's menu: Help - Restart in safe mode
