I just tried saving a .docx file as .odt hoping the issue had been cured, but
the bug persists.

I think the key to get this fixed is that simply renaming the .odt file to .sxw
causes the file to be immediately indexed, which means there is an indexer
running that understands the .odt structure but for some reason refuses to
analyze .odt files. But the bug status remains "UNCONFIRMED", after more than a
year, which means there's nobody looking at it.

If you really need your files to be indexed, the solution is change them all to
Microsoft .docx format.
