Just open a terminal and start LO via "SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen soffice" without
the quotes. Then VCL should be x11. LO has several plugins for different
desktop environments. x11 (= gen) is the generic fallback, which should almost
work anywhere on Linux. gtk3 ~= Gnome, kf5 ~= KDE. There are others for other
operating systems (win, osx, android, ios, etc).

Wayland is an Alternative to X11.
