I am against stuffing commands to the already cluttered menus.

The correct procedure here would be dynamically hiding the “Edit file” icon in
new and editable documents, and showing it only when it’s necessary, i.e., when
you open a read-only file.

Also, the menu entry you suggest in bug 80536 makes absolutely no sense in the
View menu.
