This is easily reproducible only using LibreOffice and ODF:

1. Open Impress
2. Don't pick a template
3. Right-click on text box with placeholder text "click to add text"
4. Area > Color > pick a colour > OK

Results:
Placeholder text box colour is not shown in the slide sorter, or in slideshow
mode, or on PDF export.
Typing text in the placeholder makes it visible.
