Sorry, not seeing an issue. 

With default launch of Impress the SideBar is active. Placing edit focus onto a
sd TextBox activates the Properties deck and the first Content panel exposed is
the *very* obvious Character panel--the same as provided in the MUFFIN Notebook
Bars for several of the UI choices.

Using the Character dialog (either context menu, or the main menu Format ->
Character) is a secondary work flow.

And of course this is all Direct Formatting. Discovering correct usage of
Styles for the sd modules IS a little more challenging. But both workflows
benefit from READIG THE MANUAL.
