I should also mention that, with GTK3, one cannot even navigate the list by
typing the prefix of the desired item.

Possible; I should have marked this bug as Linux-specific, and now I have.

> The list is organized,

I disagree. Or rather, it can't really be organized, as users's expectations of
order will differ, or probably be not well-enough defined.

> grouped by LO module,

No,, they aren't grouped by LO module. But I'm not complaining about that.

No separators - see the screenshot. But that's not what I'm complaining about.

Perhaps, but - that doesn't matter. That is, LO needs to provide the user with
a usable file open dialog, and a non-scrollable list box for dozens and dozens
file types / import filters is extremely inconvenient. The OS/DE may not
consider this to be a bug, since it may be making the assumption that the list
is not very long - expecting apps not to have as many options, or to use
additional controls to narrow the list down etc. And the fact that two
difference VCLs have the same issues strengthens the possibility that this is
the assumption.

That's why this can't simply be dismissed as NOTOURBUG.

We should first consider whether we should use additional filtering controls in
the file open dialog (which are available IIANM); and we should also contact
the authors of GTK and KDE Frameworks respectively about this issue.

Which small set of filter controls?
