If you keep the menu open for multiple selections consider the situation where
you want to run a single action with a popup menu (whether main menu or the
context menu) and you need to click somewhere to close the menu.

It's standard behavior and very reasonable. The alternatives are clear (not to
mention keyboard shortcuts) and the recommendation to use character styles.
