Really, how valid is an alpha sort?  Default size of our internal history (as
held in user profile .xcu) is *25* entries.  

Yes it can be expanded or shrunk via expert configuration--and the MRU list of
recents drives the thumbnails displayed on the Start Center.

Access via Tools -> Options -> Advanced 'Open Expert configuration'

Search for these settings:

RecentDocsThumbnail -- false will show generic icons in the SC

PickListSize -- set to 25 from 4.2 builds (was 10 previously), and ranges to
999 IIRC.

Once changed via Expert configuration dialog, the stanzas in the
registrysettings.xcu can be directly edited there if preferred.

Point is while pining of documents to the top of the MRU list (bug 38742) would
be helpful, it never has been clear that an alpha sort of the MRU stack would
be.
