I can follow the discomfort in switching the option on after some changes have
been done. However this is how it usually works in other programs too. And how
could you know whether the one or the other parameter has changed (in order to
adopt post-hoc).

What we could do is to check the aspect ration checkbox by default (for
images). We scale images proportionally by default when using the mouse (you
have to press Shift for open aspect ratio), while the opposite is true for
shapes.
