I've a developer (though not an LO developer).

Yes, when a column is shown or hidden, the visibility of the cells to the next
of it needs to be recalculated. The same recalculation happens when a column is
deleted. Clearly the performance impact there is minor (I have never seen it in
practice, and I've reported plenty of bugs

including very subtle performance once (e.g. #131859).
