Base with embedded HSQL and Java performance sucks big time depending on
which version of Java you use and how you have set up access to your
database file.

However, this is not as such a developer question - although some of the
poor performance is invariably linked to the code - the search
functionality has always been a poor performer thanks to OOo/LO's
requirement to load the whole ******* result set into memory...
