current master windows build break: ninja: build stopped: subcommand failed.

I have now worked through finding 3 path-related bugs and fixing 2 of them,
and there are still more, and I've spent 4 days worth of spare time on it.

At this point I recommend we simply give up and revert the ninja patch, it
is not worth it.
