Thanks Andras and Regina, finally worked out that my configure
process was exiting early because of another problem, which was
why the build was failing.<br>

<pre wrap="">A standard installation of the DirectX SDK sets $DXSDK_DIR so
configure finds it automatically. If that fails, you can set it
manually by the --with-directx-home configure switch.
