Ah, you are correct.

The default configuration looks for 'lightdm-session', but we don't provide
one (and I don't think we ever have). So we should either do that, or
change the default configuration (probably the right solution).

Could you please file a bug?

The purpose of lightdm-session is to run sessions through a shell script,
which is traditionally how X sessions are run (at least for Debian/Ubuntu
which access a lot of junk /etc/X11/Xsession). There's no need for if your
session can set everything up itself.
