There is no good way (=config option) to hide the user-avatar right now, unless you wanna create a separate icon theme holding an empty "avatar-default" icon. I haven't tried, but that could work. What do you refer to with "login panel"? The window that holds the avatar, username and password-entry or the "panel" at the top of the screen? And in what sense bigger?
