I guess I could in this patch, but in the next patches I'd just have
to remove it.

This is true in this patch, but not after the next patches.

I could, but I don't think it helps anything. It doesn't make a
difference for the compiler, and doesn't make a difference for the
human since the scope of m is 6 lines including whitespace :)
