No. I apologise - you are right and I was wrong.

On first connection of the device it is indeed 12d1:14fe (dmesg output below). 
usb_modeswitch is run against 12d1:14fe and it changes to 12d1:1506.

What confused me was, that this change persists until the device is powered off
using it’s own power switch. I am used to USB dongles which are powered down 
immediately they are disconnected. This device (E5776) has a substantial internal 
battery - and normally I never power it off.
