Same reply for me.  So maybe that says the hardware is capable of it,
but the firmware still gates what bands/providers can be used?  Also
Verizon is 1xRTT/EVDO/LTE so perhaps the firmware change is required to
deal with some of the oddities of a dual-mode SIM card.  No idea, but
what I do know was that the device cannot see Verizon at all despite the
fact that I know it's there.
