I should have mentioned the patch was for the ddx.

It occurred to me that using the AM_SILENT_RULES functionality in
automake 1.11 might be a better solution.
Compared to the last patch this one defaults to quiet output. Override
with --disable-silent-rules or make V=1
Should still be compatible with earlier versions of automake.
