I wouldn't rule out a manufacturing defect, interestingly both laptops are
mentioned in the nVidia GPU litigation [1].

Have you considered donating/lending out one of the affected laptops instead?
It looks like physical access and being able to take the laptop apart would
actually be helpful here to diagnose the problem.
