[Problem]
The internal display is distorted with vertical bands of different colors
separated by black and white noise.  This worked in Ubuntu 11.10 (kernel 3.0).

The  the good news is that an external monitor now works perfectly through the
mini displayport, which did not work in Ubuntu 11.10.
