If you decided to follow NVIDIA naming scheme, OK it is your concern as developers.
But it's not just the actual version and revision of the chipset, but also descriptive string itself - "Chipset".

NV50, G8x, G9x, MCPxx are also Tesla cards. They do not follow the same pattern as newer cards and so it might not be as easy to identify their family. But there is the wiki page to help for that.
