Yes.

Distros already ship their packages? And you need packages for various
distros anyway.
Besides that, there *are* "standard" paths in configure as I said before,
and when all distros switch to them (Debian will soon[1]), this is a
non-issue.

There is one. The current ./configre defaults.

There is always historical paths which need to be migrated to the new one.
