In general, building OpenOffice.org seems to be hard enough on Linux, so I certainly wouldn't advice for somebody new to it to try to do it on Windows first. Please install a Linux distribution that is well supported by the ooo-build infrastructure. That would primarily mean openSUSE 11.2 or Debian unstable I guess. Especially, note that people using Ubuntu have reported all kinds of problems.

The bonobo folder is not relevant at all, it is just some leftover cruft.

Yes, if/when you eventually succeed to build OpenOffice.org in Windows, too, then you can indeed use Visual Studio to debug it. But there is a lot to do first to learn how to build it. And note that you certainly can not *build* it inside Visual Studio. You do need Cygwin for that. (The Visual C++ command-line compiler is used, but from makefiles and scripts being run in Cygwin, not from Visual Studio.)
