Peter, Yes. Ubuntu 10.04 through to 11.10.
You can safely install Freetype 2.4.5+ manually into Ubuntu. Download the freetype 2.4.5 source and run './configure', 'make', 'sudo make install'. In my experience this was very simple & in no way broke ubuntu.
