The display adaptor problem seems exceedingly difficult to solve,
particularly if you want to solve it for X11 in general rather than
some recent XFree86 version. The whole purpose of X11 is to abstract
the application from the display adaptor and physical screen. It does
this exceedingly well.

Since I use Sun's X11 server as my normal desktop, I am of course
interested in solutions which work beyond XFree86, and somehow work
without modifying the server. With Sun's X11 server, some video cards
do support gamma tables which can be loaded, while others do not (mine
does not). Whether gamma tables are applied or not depends on the
type of X11 visual selected.

I suspect that we will end up being stuck with associating a profile
with a simple DISPLAY ID, with unqualified DISPLAY IDs being prefixed
with the current host's IP address or hostname.

There is some possibility of using keys from xauth to concretely
identify the logical display. I don't know enough about xauth to say
for sure.

Bob
